Beyond Golf

L'Albatros Course

Designed by architects Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge to welcome prestigious international tournaments, the renowned L'Albatros course has hosted all but two of the last 24 editions of the Open de France since it opened in 1990. Ahead of the 100th edition, it underwent a substantial renovation programme to prepare for The 2018 Ryder Cup and transform the venue into a global golf destination. The programme included the installation of a new irrigation and drainage system, improvements to bunkers and lake edging, modifications to the first and 16th greens to offer more pin positions, as well as the enlargement of seven tees to accommodate more players, caddies and referees.

Regarded as one of the best championship courses in Europe – it was ranked sixth in the Golf World (UK) Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe 2014 – L’Albatros has also received praise from professionals and amateurs alike. After his victory at The 2013 Open de France, Graeme McDowell said: “This is such a difficult course here (at Le Golf National), we may have one of the greatest Ryder Cup venues in European golf history in 2018”

L’Albatros course combines the traditional feel of a links course with the expansive features of a modern stadium course. Slick greens, vast undulating fairways, water hazards and links-style bunkers define this outstanding layout. At 7,321 yards (6,695 metres), the par 72 course requires golfers to use every club in the bag. The final four holes, which are the course’s signature holes, surrounded by water hazards, make L’Albatros one of the finest golf courses in Europe.

L'Aigle Course

Opened a year after L'Albatros course, the par 71 L'Aigle course offers a kinder layout to its sister course. Golfers must remain alert though, as the undulating fairways, immaculate greens and long rough can still catch the best players out.

At 6,519 yards (5,961 metres), L'Aigle course is by no means a walkover, as hopefuls of the French Junior Championships and Handigolf Opens have found when the tournaments were played on the course in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

L'Oiselet Course

L'Oiselet is a gentle nine-hole par 32 course, which is an enjoyable test for all standards of golfers. It is the Academy course of Le Golf National, located close to the golf academy. The 2,180 yards (1,993 metres) layout presents a technical challenge to experienced golfers but is also designed to welcome beginners who want to develop their game and course management skills.

Golfers playing this course can expect a taste of French History when crossing the 'Merantais Gate', the last remaining gate that delineated the vast Domain of Versailles under King Louis XIV.
