Open Championship General Information

Event Information

The week begins with the practice days running from Sunday, 14 July through Wednesday, 17 July where players will be practising throughout the day. A field of 156 competitors will play 36 holes of stroke play on Thursday and Friday. The field is then cut to the leading 70 players and ties who will play a further 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday.

The Champion Golfer of the Year will be the player with the lowest 72 hole aggregate. In the event of a tie, the players will play a four hole play-off and the Champion will be the player with the lowest four hole aggregate score. If there is still a tie, play will continue over the 18th until a winner is determined.

The presentation ceremony will be held immediately after the conclusion of play on Sunday, 21 July. We want to help you make the most of your experience so please use the FAQ's below and Top Tips for spectators to the right for further information.

​1. Where are the official 'Park and Ride' parking sites positioned? 

Spectators are encouraged to follow signs to The Open's official Public Parking locations and will be directed to the appropriate car park.

2. Can I bring my own food and drink?

​Yes you can

3. Can I bring a buggy/pushchair? 
​Yes you can. However, please be aware of the uneven terrain.

4. Can I leave and re-enter the venue during the day?
Yes. Daily and Weekly Tickets will permit the holder to re-enter the event in respect of each date (or dates) printed on the ticket. In order to re-enter the event, holders of Daily and Weekly Tickets must obtain an appropriate “pass out” (e.g. hand stamp or wristband) before leaving the event which must be shown at the time of re-entry together with their ticket in order to gain entry to the event. Tickets must be retained at all times and provided for inspection by security personnel as required. 

5. Can I bring a folding chair?

Folding chairs are not permitted into the course. There are over 18,000 public grandstand seats located around the course which you can use. These are available to the general public free of charge on a first come first served basis.

6. Can I bring a bag/rucksack and is there a limit to its size? 

Bags/rucksacks are permitted into The Open. There are no restrictions on size. Please note that all bags are subjected to an airport-style security check at the entrance.

7. Are the premises accessible for wheelchairs?

The Open endeavours to provide a standard of accessible facilities for all visitors and spectators. Wheelchair accessible stands are available at the 16th green, 18th green and the Practice Ground.

8. Can I take pictures and videos?

No audio or video capture is permitted at any time. No still photography is permitted on Championship Days.
